Maintaining your Leather Apparel

December 14th, 2011

Leather has an appeal all of its own. It’s something that is fashionable, has a dependable look and feel and comes in a huge variety of finishes, styles and colours. It never seems to go out of fashion. While it is easy to buy one, the trick is in maintaining it well so that it retains its fresh look and feel even after many years of use. You just have to keep a few things right.

No, you don’t toss it into the washing machine along with the rest of your laundry! It needs a different type of maintenance and the better the care you bestow on your leather apparel, the longer it will last and look good. Leather needs to breathe, so never store it in a plastic bag. Instead, use a cloth bag or cover to wrap it. Recently at a fuel management conference, I saw a delegate wearing a leather jacket in the evening that was creased pretty badly. Leather can be ironed to clear out the wrinkles. Just make sure that the iron is on the lowest setting. Place a grocery bag between the iron and the garment and iron lightly. Don’t use excessive heat as it can damage the leather. Place it on a sturdy hanger so it doesn’t lose its shape. If it gets wet, let it dry naturally. Avoid humidity and extreme heat, as this can damage the skin. You can also use a damp cloth to wipe away dirt.

If the apparel is suede or nubuck, brush it regularly without using any cleaning chemicals. And talking of chemicals, don’t use a spray or perfume when wearing a leather item as the chemical content can damage the skin of the garment. If the garment is badly soiled or damaged, take the help of a leather specialist who is better suited for such tasks.

With these simple steps, your leather garment will last a lifetime while making you look good!
